Hailstorm
August 19, 2003

One day in August, the air grew strangely cold and suddenly huge stones of ice plummeted from the heavens. The storm lasted about twenty minutes and caused massive damage. I believe no one was badly hurt; I heard that one woman had a hailstone hit her and it broke one of the bones in her hand. But that was the worst.

Hailstones were literally as large as a half-dollar (left). And after the storm, the ground was covered in them (right).

The air turned suddenly cold, causing a blanket of mist to rise up from pavement and rocks. Leaves ripped from trees (along with dead birds) littered the ground.

Damage to property was high. Many cars had half their windows and mirrors smashed. Most cars were totalled. One coworker claimed to have a dent the size of her fist in her hood.

The storm took down half a tree in my neighbor's yard.
