Food of the Adult Variety

We started feeding Sean solid foods a few weeks ago. He’d been grabbing at our food for several weeks and staring at us intently while we ate for a couple months. I occasionally gave him a whole carrot or bit lettuce leaf or green bean to gnaw on, so he could start getting a taste for non-mom-milk food.

We started with banana, which he seemed to like when I gave him a big chunk of it once a while ago. I mean, who doesn’t like banana? I gave him a chunk and he managed to gnaw off a bit and swallow some, before, well:

It was a particularly messy and ineffective way to eat, so we got Sean a little bowl and spoon and mashed up his banana for him. Dipped the spoon in and brought it toward Sean’s mouth and — he grabbed the spoon and immediately put the correct end in his mouth himself. He’d clearly been studying us. He needed some assistance getting the spoon *out* — I guess it’s not intuitive to let go of the spoon once it’s in your mouth. But I was amazed at his eating skill right from the start.

Sean loves to eat. He has always enjoyed his mom-milk thoroughly, and this appears to be just as true for solid foods. He gets excited when we put him in his little chair and grabs for the bowl and spoon as soon as he sees them. The first time we let him eat as much as he wanted was funny; he ate and ate and ate and then got this confused look on his face. He seemed to want more, but then didn’t. He squirmed. He made some noise. I realized that this was probably the first time he’d experienced the sensation of ‘full.’ He wasn’t quite sure what to make of it.

Voice

Oh, golly. It seems that as of yesterday, Sean has found his voice. I was rocking him for a nap and then suddenly he started yelling: ‘aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.’ Not really upset, just, well, loud and long. I looked down at him surprised. He also looked a bit surprised, looked up at me and giggled. That did it; I started laughing. Needless to say that nap took a while. But he’s clearly enthralled with the volume and endurance he can get now instead of the little fussing noises that had been his bailiwick. Well, looks like it’s time for the loudness to begin…

Sean stats and teeth

08.06.10 | Permalink | Comment?

Sean had his 6-month pediatrician appointment today and got his official stats. He is 17 lbs 13 oz heavy and 28″ long. By the way, that puts him at 90th percentile for length. Anyone surprised? Anyone?

Also, tooth #6 finally finished coming in last Wednesday, July 28. It’s amazing the difference between a teething and non-teething baby (at least ours): the latter is so much happier, more relaxed, produces hardly any drool, doesn’t always desperately want to have something in his mouth.

Our teething holiday lasted about 5 days. Now we can see a new tooth starting to emerge on Sean’s bottom left (purple, below). It looks like it might be two teeth away from the nearest one, which would make it a canine. But the lateral incisors are supposed to come in before the canines. That is, if the baby reads the book on proper teething order, which as I’ve already mentioned, Sean clearly did not do. Of course, this tooth may just be peeking out, waiting for another tooth to come in first, as tooth #5 did. We’ll just have to wait and see (and wipe up drool).

And as an administrative matter, I’ve had to add a captcha to the comments; I’ve had over 50 spam comments in the past few days. I know they’re annoying, but I haven’t found another good (free) way to keep out the spambots. Sorry.

Busy busy day today, so we’ll get six-month pictures up in the next couple days. Meanwhile, here’s a couple from a few days ago:

Almost Sitting

With all that’s going on in our lives these days, it takes a while for pictures and videos to make it up to the blog… these videos were taken a couple weeks ago, when Sean was starting to get the hang of sitting. Today, he’s really able to sit pretty well — as long as he doesn’t get too excited or distracted. I’ll try to get more up-to-date videos up here shortly…

(Oh also, Tooth #6 is about to make a grand entrance. Stay tuned.)
