 Berlin
(Ray's Whirlwind Tour)
November 27, 2003

Ben and I took a night train up to Berlin to visit our friend Ray for a long weekend. The first day (a Thursday), Ray took off from work to give us his grand whirlwind tour of Berlin. It was quite extensive and we saw a lot of the city, got our bearings, and drank beer. What could be better?

Ben and Ray, anticipating our bar-of-beer. Four litres of beer. Mmm...

The famous Brandenburg Gate, approaching Christmastime.

A section of the East Side Gallery. After the Berlin wall came down in 1990, artists painted it with all sorts of interesting murals. This art, in particular comes from the album cover of Pink Floyd: The Wall. While not about the Berlin wall specifically, Pink Floyd played a famous concert in Berlin in the shadow of the wall.

Unfortunately, the original gallery is overrun by damage and graffiti. Restoration work in 2000 has only suffered the same fate.

Berlin is still a city of rejuvination, especially in the eastern part. That means tearing down buildings, as well as building new ones.

What would Berlin be without a protest? We stumbled upon students (and others) protesting the proposed increase in tuition and fees that University students would have to pay.

A particular favorite of mine. Germany loves its bicycles. (Yay!)

A photo for Mike: Marx and Engels. (Do you know which is which?)
